When real estate investor and developer Liberty Property Trust UK gained planning permission for an £8M large storage and distribution warehouse facility in Northampton, they worked alongside Fusion21 to negotiate and discharge site planning conditions.

Volker Fitzpatrick was the contractor appointed to deliver the 9-month project - which completed in April 2019, and Fusion21 supported the firm to meet delivery targets and employment and training outcomes. This included the creation of 3 work placements and 3 jobs – and saw local man Dave secure the role of Document Controller.

Dave said: “After being unemployed due to an illness for some time, finding out I had been selected for an interview locally was exciting, but daunting – I was grateful to receive interview support from Fusion21, which increased my confidence.

“I was delighted when I heard I’d got the contract – responsible for the preparation and management of all documents associated with the development. It’s a role I’d done in the past so I felt comfortable – and working three days a week with a short commute was perfect for me as have a disability that causes fatigue.

“Whilst working on site, I completed two training courses, one in Document Lifestyle Management and one in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, adding to my employability skills. After the contract ended, Volker Fitzpatrick offered me permanent employment on another local project – I felt like I’d hit the jackpot gaining a full time job.

“I love what I do. Working makes me feel valued, and Volker Fitzpatrick have treated me so well. They have always been considerate of my health problems and have made every effort to be professional and inclusive.

“Fusion21’s support has changed my life for the better – I can’t thank them enough.”

Rachael Atkin, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Fusion21 said: “Planning applications can deliver measurable social value outcomes that really benefit local communities - supporting with both skills development and retention within regions and the construction industry.

“Dave has gone from strength to strength since he secured his initial contract with Volker Fitzpatrick and it’s fantastic that he has been able to sustain permanent employment as a result. We wish him success for the future.”
