Retrofit takes off
It looks like the retrofit agenda is about to go mainstream, so here is an update for our clients on where we are at and our next steps.
We’ve decided to join with Procurement for Housing in developing our retrofit framework – this will give it huge scale and will mean better value.
Meanwhile, we’ve been running a ‘Pilot PV’ exercise -we’ve had competing firms putting together proposals on a same estate, to see how their theoretical models can be applied. We’ve had some interesting results and are making these available to the Retrofit Group so individual RSLs can make informed decisions about the best option for them – its not a ‘one size fits all’.
Clearly, there is still much research to be done on how we can roll out retrofit on a large scale in a way we can afford. Frameworks will help, but some of the current pilots are so expensive that they cannot be replicated on a large scale. They are important, though, to show us what is possible. We need to assess where the ‘tipping point’ is between whether elements are cost –effective or not. Partly this will depend on what we want to achieve – fuel cost reductions or carbon emission savings.
We also need to work out what is the most effective way of delivering – one hit or (more likely) a structured approach over time. To this end our KTP associates, Sarah Palmer and Luke Smith are in place and will be working with RSL clients on ways of delivering retrofit and ensuring communication with residents enables them to get the most out of the work being done.
