Wrekin Housing Trust Reduces Energy Bills with EWI Programme
Midlands based Wrekin Housing Trust (WHT) accessed the Fusion21 Retrofit framework to procure an External Wall Insulation (EWI) Project aimed at saving residents money on their utility bills.
The scheme involved installation of EWI to sixty flats in Wellington, Shropshire. Sustainable Building Services (UK) were awarded the work after a successfully winning the contract through a mini-competition undertaken by Fusion21 on behalf of WHT.
WHT sought to reduce residents' utility bills and provide improved energy efficiency of its housing stock.
The work has also made a huge aesthetic difference to the community and has brought the stock up to modern standards. Older properties built with solid walls let out twice as much heat as cavity wall properties. As the walls of the Grinshill flats are solid concrete walls, many of the Trust's residents were struggling to keep heat in their homes. The solid walls also meant that these flats were unsuitable for conventional cavity wall insulation.
Instead, EWI was undertaken to help to prevent heat escaping from the properties, making them more efficient to heat.
Dale Heaton, Category Manager for Wrekin Housing Trust, said, "Residents of the flats that have been insulated have already commented on how much warmer their homes are. The residents have also been very accommodating since the work started, which has been very much appreciated and we're pleased that they are now seeing a difference."
According to the Energy Savings Trust*, the typical fuel bill savings for insulating solid walls in a flat is estimated to be around £145 per year. Not only is this passing on a great saving to residents, but it also means that WHT is taking steps to help the environment as the carbon dioxide savings for carrying out the external wall insulation to the entire scheme will be around 36 metric tonnes of C02 per year.
The Trust has also taken advantage of the existing scaffolding to fit new windows, which were not due for another seven years.
