Shared apprentice pioneer Lewis secures full time position

Lewis Alker (pictured) has good reason to celebrate.

Not only was he the first person to be recruited for the shared apprenticeship programme ‘Building Skills for the Future’, starting as an apprentice plasterer in November 2012, but he has now secured himself a full time job.

Building Skills for the Future works with a number of partners including Local Authorites, Registered Providers, Contractors and Local Colleges to support young people into construction.

Managers of the innovative scheme, a partnership between Construction Industry Training Board and Fusion21, took an instant liking to Lewis who showed commitment and a hard working ethic from day one.  His shared apprenticeship journey has seen him work with both regional and national contractors on Liverpool construction sites including: Lovell Partnerships, Bullock Construction, Countryside properties and Penny Lane Builder’s, who were the first company to offer Lewis a placement via the scheme.

During this time Lewis also developed his work based evidence portfolio for his tutors at St Helens College and recently achieved his NVQ level 2 plastering qualification with flying colours.  This has led to his first full time job offer from his first placement with Liverpool based Penny Lane Builders and Lewis takes up his position on 8th September.

The scheme works by pooling together shorter-term apprentice vacancies to create full-time opportunities. The scheme enables contractors to meet local training obligations and maximise additional training opportunities for apprentices.

Nancy Sutton, Fusion21’s Shared Apprentice Programme Coordinator, said : ”We are committed  to working with each apprentice towards full employment.  Lewis is passionate about his trade and has proven  that he deserves this opportunity.. He was our first shared apprentice and to see his journey reach its destination has been very fulfilling.”
