Golden Gates Housing Trust’s (GGHT) Employment Initiatives Team has teamed up with Fusion21’s Community Regeneration Team to offer 48 GGHT residents the opportunity to gain valuable qualifications and work experience to support them in successfully securing employment.
As part of GGHT’s on-going commitment to helping residents who face barriers to employment, the “1st Steps to Trade” programme offers a range of courses for free including Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), Manual Handling, First Aid, Working at Heights and Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).
The programme is designed to address the skills and experience gap that would help people attain sustainable jobs. So far 11 residents have successfully completed the course at the Fusion21 Building Skills Centre (pictured, above) and feedback has been excellent. Over the coming months there will be three more courses running to meet the target of 48.
There have already been two successful outcomes from the programme, with a local garage taking on one attendee, Paul Snape, as a mechanic and James Hill, who secured a role at GGHT, as a labourer.
James said: “The support I have had has been brilliant. From day one I felt more motivated, the course was enjoyable and very informative. I have no doubt that I wouldn’t have got the job without all the support I have been given by GGHT and Fusion21.”
Ian McDonough, Community Regeneration Manager for Fusion21, said: “Our regeneration team have really enjoyed working with the GGHT tenants and seeing them benefit from our bespoke package offer of recognised qualifications, work experience and references which all promote employability.”
GGHT Employment Initiatives Manager, Tracey Walsh, said: “We are very pleased to offer this programme to tenants. It really will boost attendee’s employability when they are looking for jobs.”
