Knowsley School Students Explore Careers in Construction

Female pupils from Kirkby in Knowsley, Merseyside have visited a local housing development to learn about careers in construction and civil engineering to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day.

Twelve girls studying at All Saints Catholic High School were given a tour of the Edenhurst Grange housing development in Roby,  Liverpool where 124 three and four bedroom detached family homes are currently being built by developer Anwyl Homes.

During the visit, the pupils chatted to the site team about the variety of roles available in the building industry, as the majority consider studying engineering at GCSE level.

Fusion21 is working with local authority Knowsley Borough Council and supporting Anwyl Homes to deliver social value opportunities on the development – from arranging educational visits to creating apprenticeships and jobs, to ensure that people living in the local community enjoy the maximum possible benefits.

"We really struggle to get girls to choose engineering at GSCE. Visits like these are great to get girls to see their potential to work in engineering and construction - they are still viewed as men’s careers.”

Deborah Hunt, Head of Department for Design, Tech and Engineering at All Saints
