Social Investment

Alongside our grant programmes, the Foundation invests in social investment funds that support VCSE organisations and mission-led businesses that tackle social and economic exclusion.

We recently invested £250k in the Resolution Ventures’ WorkerTech Fund, which has so far raised £6.75m of its £9m target. WorkerTech backs startups using technology to improve workers’ lives in sectors experiencing low pay and insecure employment.

Fusion21 Foundation also committed £2 million as a founding investor in the Community Builders Fund, which was established by Social Investment Business and is worth more than £20 million in total. The fund is for UK charities and social enterprises based in England, Wales and Scotland who are improving people’s lives, or the environment they live in. It provides loans of between £100k and £1.5m.

As part of our social investment work, we supported the Independent Commission on Social Investment, launched by Lord Victor Adebowale CBE. The Commission engaged with over 300 social enterprises, took over twenty hours of recorded evidence and held sixteen engagement sessions with social enterprises, policy workshops and public witness sessions. Its final report on how the social investment market can support the growth of social enterprises is available here. Our social investment strategy incorporates the learning from this project.
